About The Photographer

Hi! My name is Erika Blackwell and I am photographer of Center of Attention Photography. Located in Northern Michigan. My blog is a way for everyone to view some of my favorite images from recent sessions and get to know me! I am the very VERY proud mommy to Braylan. I LOVE what I do and I hope you can tell! These are not JUST take pictures I take. I create memories... I pour my heart into my work. I genuinely care about my clients and get to know them and learn what they like and dislike. I am an artist. A business woman. I love to have fun. I love to sing. Dance. Make crazy sounds to get those smiles. I am very open! I work into the night even though my son hates to sleep. I LOVE oreos and soymilk. I dream big. I have tons of ideas. I cry during touching ceremonies and awesome reception speeches. I try not to be messy but it happens. I have so many new faces to meet this year and just thinking about it makes me excited!

Oh little blog…

Friday, May 18th, 2012

I make wishes a lot for more time to work. Shooting, editing, emailing, calling, designing, prop hunting, burning CD’s, packaging, mailing, a rare blog or fb post… What I really need is more time to just kick it with my son in the yard on a warm evening. What can you do? I LOVE my job and the biggest thing is managing business and family. My in-home babysitter graduates from high school in 2 weeks and she will be watching my little man more so I think you will see more posts here. Oh yes. And a new website.

Florida

Monday, May 7th, 2012

It’s been a week since we got back from our family vacation to Florida. We stayed in St. Pete Beach and the weather was great. We had our ups and downs with a sick one year old… but he did his best. Hopefully it’s a stage but you will see his face in the pictures… he hates the water! Ocean… pools… even the bath in St. Pete. :) Here is a couple pics I had a chance to edit. I will post more when I get a chance to go through them. I am catching up editing and designing some albums and shooting a few sessions this week.

Get to know me…

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Hi! I’m Erika! I have a passion for photography… seriously! I also use the dot dot dot thing a lot. It’s what I do. I also use the smiley. :) I can’t help it!! I’m pretty much always smiling. Sometimes my cheeks and jaw hurt after my son does something cute or I’m at a session/wedding. There is so much in life to be happy and thankful about. I also jump topics a lot when I talk. Back to the passion thing. If you personally know me you know that I eat, sleep, take care of my son, and talk/work photography. I can’t help it! I have so many ideas and plans it’s crazy to keep up with. It’s helpful and hurtful I think. I totally underestimate myself sometimes and I feel like I need to fit in with other photographers to keep my business growing. I have come to realize that I have my own style and yes sometimes I do get some inpiration from others BUT I need to get doing what I do. It’s very hard to keep up with people opening photography businesses and trying to stay current and up to date. Okay on to some Q&A’s!

When did you decide to become a photographer?
Shortly after taking my brother’s senior pictures fall of 2004. I borrowed my aunts camera and LOVED it! I had a couple of my friends “model” for some pictures… hung a few posters around town and it all kind of started there. This was before myspace or facebook was the in thing.

If you weren’t a photographer what would you be?
I think I would love to do event/wedding planning. I help my friends and family with their weddings all the time and it’s so fun to be creative. That or own my own children’s boutique/resale.

Future goals?
To keep growing. We are building a new bigger studio this year and updating/adding new camera equiptment. Hopefully in the future I will hire someone full time to work with me. I also want to go to some photography confrences and workshops. It never hurts to keep learning!

Best advice from another photographer?
Shoot what you enjoy and not what you feel you have to. I stopped photographing babies between the ages of 15 days-6 months. Lots of reasons why for me… I love shooting newborns when they are sleepy and easy to pose. There comes a point where they are wide awake with very little facial expression. I’m all about wanting this to be capured on a personal level but a whole photoshoot is hard.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of your business?
Obvious choice here… spend time with my family. I love going to the mall even when I don’t need anything. I just love to hangout and watch my one year old interact with people. He’s a ham! I love going to the beach, park, or anywhere I get to just relax.

Other fun facts:
I’m 27
I love reality tv
I really want a tattoo but I hate needles
I have a sister and a brother
As of right now Aunt to 3 but the number is growing
I love lemons
I want to change the colors of our walls all the time
I love to throw parties
We even have pictures hung in our bathroom
I’ve been with Josh since he was 15 and I was 16
I am obsessed with baby names and love hearing about how names came to be
I have 3 cameras and 3 computers
I’ve been to Hawaii, Florida, Ohio, Canada… SO-FAR

Got a question for me? Shoot!

Braylan+Snowwww

Monday, March 5th, 2012

My son has not been the biggest fan of snow. He likes to say, “snowwwwwwww” but when it comes to the cold stuff no way! We got him all dressed warm took him out and the second he got some on him he balled. So we waited a while and let him get used to the idea… took him out again a couple weeks later and still not a fan. We have a super hard time finding any type of footwear for him because he has a chubby wide big foot for a baby. He is now walking and someone suggested rainboots. We went and found some at a local store and they didn’t have his size… I try as much as possible to shop locally and I hope everyone else reading my blog does too. I could go on and on about that subject but I think we all know why it’s important. Long story short I had to order some online. We got them in last Friday and I had the bright idea to take him back out. It was before we got a the huge snow storm and the roads were bare. He loved it! Now I think it’s time to try again with actually playing in the snow and maybe he will keep his mittens on.

my amazing boy

I have the best time being a mommy! Anyone who has children hopefully get the same little butterfly feelings, happy goosebumps, huge smile and grab your cheeks, high pitched squeal like I do when your kids so somethings awesome. Because even when it’s not awesome and he just does something that is funny, smart, kind, loving… I still can’t get over it. My husband works nights so the only time we spend together are on the weekends that I don’t have events. I no longer take portrait sessions on weekends UNLESS I have a wedding booked and down state U.P. couples need to do their engagement session. It’s the only time that I get to spend with my family.

Braylan will be 14 months on Friday (Feb. 10th.) He is trying so hard to walk and just needs to get a little more balance. He is going through a little stage right now… it comes and goes but I have been asked a few times if he is going through his terrible two’s early. He’s learning what he likes and doesn’t like. He copies noises and some words we say. Waves. Kisses and blows kisses. LOVES animals. Laughs when you actually scare him. SHREK in the car. Veggie straws. Playing with his friend’s. ELLEANA. Brushing his own hair. Just this week picking his nose… yeah I know right? He also either shuts the computer or bites it right when I’m in the middle of emails. He gives flity eyes. Climbs on everything. AND tons of other fun stuff.

Also my second Boudoir Mini Session Event sold out the 6 spots in less that 24 hours again. YAY! I’m so glad that people are booking and I have to say I LOVE these sessions! I have a sample password protected gallery for all interested ladies! I will be planning another one for May so if you want on my waiting list contact me.

I think it’s cute! Braylan and Davey supporting their teams.

BRAYLAN JAMES- My baby is ONE

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

I am not a very good blog keeper! Some people ask me where the posts with my son are. I looked back and there is not very many. I am taking a mini vacation from the business Dec. 23rd-Jan. 6th. I’m going to be changing a little when I return! I’m also going to be posting lots of sessions from the last year of my clients.

This year my life totally changed! I’m happy to say it has been the best yet most challenging thing I have ever done. I have completely loved every second of motherhood. I was lucky enough to tough it out and be a stay at home mom AND fulltime photographer. Yeah I don’t know how I did it! I guess late nights turned into early morning editing. Every free moment returning calls, changing a diaper, emailing, feeding Braylan, placing orders, shooting, feeding myself, wedding… running around like a mad woman. I’m working on a plan for 2012 because it was very stressful…. but it all worked out in the end. My business took off this year and I guess I wasn’t as ready as I thought I was. I dreamed of this since day one of opening and it took me a while. I have a awesome mom who helps me SO much with Braylan when she isn’t working during the week. My husband works nights and he wakes up with the little guy when I have morning shoots. I tell ya! I know every mom thinks it of their own child but this little man is my world and is amazing. He has such a huge personality. His favorite thing is shopping! Not kidding… he doesn’t care much for products he just loves the attention people give him while he’s strolled around in the cart. Such a ham!! He just turned one and is fast as lightning crawling everywhere. He’s not walking yet and I’m in for it when he does because he’s very curious about EVERYTHING. He has always been a big boy and is in 2-3T clothing right now at 12 months. People usually can’t believe his age. :) He says about 8 words right now on a regular basis and loves to play hide and seek.

Here is a year of pictures of my little love!

OUR LITTLE SLUGGER

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Since Braylan has been born I have tried to take his picture out in my studio so many times. Having him in December made this into a whole process. It was freezing out. We both were so tired all the time and I just wouldn’t ask my husband for help. Now that’s it’s nice out and he LOVES it outside you will be seeing Braylan James a lot more on here. A couple weeks ago I woke up early and decided to take some baseball pictures. It was a last minute thing and Braylan did amazing! My husband was super helpful and now I have so many more ideas. I think with my own doing one theme once every couple weeks will make a happier baby (and mama.) I was feeling like I didn’t have enough pictures of him since I am lucky enough to own a photography business. Tomorrow I’m going to try again if it doesn’t rain. (My favorite from the session is up in my header pictures.) He just melts my heart!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELLEANA!

Monday, May 9th, 2011

I can’t believe how fast time flies. Ask my family or friend’s and they will tell you I can remember the craziest little details in my life. I can remember when I was 5 years old my neighbor’s house was on fire and the man in our yard telling us about the smoke and flames… I can remember the first day of kindergarten my mom walking me in after she bought me a slush puppy. I can remember my mom taking me and my brother to my grandpa’s to sleep over and taking his least favorite movie Matilda with us and him still letting us watch it. Oh and around the same time him telling me I couldn’t come over (he worked nights and was going home to sleep) and me sneaking in his backseat covering up with an old coat from his seat and sneaking to his house! Yep. I really wanted to go! My mom was freaking out looking for me. :) Oops. I remember the first time I ever got on the internet at my friend Kristen’s house and not understanding what the heck it even was! I can remember so many coversations my sister had with her now husband when they were in highschool while I was trying to sleep in the bed next to her. I remember my parents always taking us to a place we call “the farm” (which was my dad’s family property that was once a farm my great grandparents lived when they immigrated from poland) and them letting us sled, snowmobile, fish, camp, ride dirtbikes, learn to drive, pick apples, mushroom, clean the stream… My favorite place to be was there. I remember being in my friend Nicole’s room on a snowy day in Jan. 2001 and her telling her brother he was going to homecoming with me. He’s now my husband. I remember the every single day I spent in Hawaii on my senior class trip. I remember a laugh attack I had in Florida with Brittany and our friend Nathen. I remember my uncle Larry’s advice. All of it. Sleepovers… trips… fights… pictures I took way back when… the smell of people’s houses… I have the best memory like my Uncle Gerry and our family friend Donny. They both can open the pages of their memory and such amazing stories come out. I LOVE hearing about the past and reminiscing.

I am so greatful for my life. Not everyone is blessed and while my life isn’t perfect, I’m glad. Most people say it…. and it’s so true! If not for the mistakes we make we wouldn’t be who we are today. You live and you learn. Many days of my life stand out more than others and I have to say the day my niece was born was one of these days. My eyes are tearing up as I sit behind my computer at this early morning hour and type this blog. She is a huge blessing in my life. The day before my sister went grocery shopping and her feet were super swollen. My husband and I went and picked her up from her house and took her for a ride down a bumpy road. We came back to her house and ate dinner with my parents and our husbands… put the movie Baby Mama in. I was rubbing her super swollen feet toward the end of the movie when she jumped up and ran to the bathroom. She came out and said, “I think my water broke!” My parent’s had just left so we called them… I called my bestfriend’s… and we went straight to the hospital to meet them. Skip to the moment because I could type every single detail but there is TOO many to bore everyone with. My sister ended up having to have a C-section because she wouldn’t dialate. Every second she was in the O.R. I was a wreak! Then my brother-in-law brought out the camera while my sister was in recovery. I set eyes on that little doll and she had my heart. I knew our bound was going to be strong.

Today is her 2nd Birthday. The whole reason for this post is for her. I remember the first time she ate, the first time she said my name, when she saw her cousin Braylan RIGHT after he was born and the look on her face… and the other day. My sister called me to tell me something. My brother in law was just talking to Elleana and said, “Elleana your my bestfriend. Who’s yours?” She looked at him and said, “ummmm… Braylan.” Total heart melter! More tears.

I hope she has the best 2nd Birthday ever!

My big 4 month old baby!

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

This stage is so fun…. Braylan is learning everyday! He can do so many fun things now. Roll, belly laugh, play peek-a-boo, baby talk, tries to sit up… What is not fun is him teething! Poor boy is so young and is getting teeth. He puts everything in his mouth.

I can’t wait for the weather to warm up so I can start shooting outside again! I love photos outside.

Braylan just loves a good photoshoot!! hahaha…. someday!
